Learning The Quarters Time in the American Football
A standard NFL football game consists of 60 minutes with two halves of 30 minutes each and four quarters of 15 minutes each. There is a stoppage in play or a refreshment break after the end of 1st quarter and the 3rd quarter. In the school and college games, the total game time consists of 48 minutes with two halves of 24 minutes each and four quarters of 12 minutes each. Before the start of the game, captain of both the teams were joined by the Match Official for the Toss. The visiting team captain has the option to call for either “Heads” or “Tails” in the toss. The winner of the toss has to choose either from kick off the ball, goal to defend or receive the kick off ball. The winner of the toss always has a choice to render their selection at the start of the second half. However, if the winning team refuses to redeem their selection in the second half, then the other team will get an opportunity to make a selection between either three i.e. kick off the ball, goal to defend and receive the ball at the start of the second half.
What is play clock and game clock?
On an average a standard NFL football game lasts around for 90 minutes that also includes the stoppage time and the injury time. The official time of the game is been measured by the officially appointed time keeper who starts, stops and operates the clock based on the referee instructions. The following clock operated by the time keeper is called as the “Game Clock”. On the other hand , there is also a “Play Clock” which is been operated by the separate operator, that starts the clock as the game kicks off and stops the clock as referee blows the final whistle. The play clock cannot be stopped or restart in between the game. The Play clock is often used to record the entire length of the football game for the records.
Time Out: There are three time outs allowed in every half and either of the playing team can call for a time out. The first two time outs last for 3 minutes, while the last and the final time out can only be up to 40 seconds.
